Instagram, Apple and Omegle were singled out by the charity for the most serious breaches which included targeting children with self-harm content, allowing under-aged children to engage with sexual material and enabling them freely to access adult dating apps. The complaints that sparked the investigation of the nine companies were lodged by the charity 5Rights, whose founder Baroness Kidron is credited with being the architect of the Children’s Code. The companies are being investigated by the Information Commissioner for breaches of the Children’s Code, which came fully into force last September, and is designed to protect children from inappropriate and harmful content unsuitable for their ages.
